Asian Ink Brushwork Painting

The workshop will introduce the basics of ink brushwork from the Asian ink art tradition. Students will study tonal drawing, learn to work with the large Asian calligraphy brush and apply it to paint various “ideas” of elements from nature such as rocks, trees, and waters. At the same time, some of the masters’ works will be brought up to correspond with the introduction of each technique. With an enhanced understanding of the art form, students will gradually appreciate this unique tradition and the philosophy behind it. The workshop can be developed into a residency. In the residency, students will have the opportunity to practice with watercolor, create still life, and utilize all the techniques to complete a full piece at the end of the program.   Chemin Hsiao joined Flushing Town Hall as a visual arts teaching artist in 2022. Born in Taiwan, he is currently based in Queens and Brooklyn at the ChaShaMa Studio Space. Hsiao received his BFA & MFA from the School of Visual Arts. In 2021, his artist banners proposal "Dandelions Know," which raises awareness of the increased anti-Asian violence during the pandemic, was selected as the winner for the Noguchi Museum. He is a past recipient of the New Work Grant and ArtSite Public Art Commissioning from the Queens Council on the Arts. He was also a participant in the Immigrant Artist Program at the New York Foundation for the Arts as a mentee in 2016 and as a mentor in 2022.
  
  His artworks have been exhibited at various venues such as the Walter Wickiser Gallery, SFA Projects, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Flushing Town Hall, and Queens Botanical Garden. Since 2019, he has completed several commissioned public murals for Queens communities, including those from Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Flushing.
  
  In addition to his studio practice, Hsiao has taught in-person and virtual visual arts workshops to students from kindergarten to seniors for organizations such as the Met Museum, the Noguchi Museum, Queens Museum, Queens Botanical Garden, ProjectArt, Queens Public Library, Abrons Arts Center, and various senior centers through the SU-CASA program.
