In Podrenos Florecer: We Will Bloom, Sunnyside Community Services and Queens-based artist Ines Ruiz collaborated with 20 community members - 10 older adults and 10 youth - to explore youth and aging and how these themes relate to identity, culture, and community. Based on mutual acceptance and personal experience, participants reflected on what it means to grow older in our cultures and society. Channeling these themes, participants created individual mixed-media artwork on canvas using paints, fabrics, and other media, and combined them into a collaborative and cohesive work. The project is an opportunity to learn about diverse cultures and perspectives on aging, promote intergenerational connectedness, and combat ageism through the recognition that older adults have a wealth of knowledge and lived experience to share, and that youth can bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
